Post-weld heat treatment is used to relieve the residual stresses created by welding and to improve the toughness and ductility of the welded area. When metal cools after welding, trapped stresses can remain and may cause distortion, cracking, or brittle behavior, especially in thicker sections or high-strength steels. By heating the weld area to a controlled soaking temperature, holding it, and then cooling slowly, those stresses are redistributed and the microstructure in the heat‑affected zone becomes more favorable, reducing hardness and increasing toughness. This is why PWHT is commonly required for high-strength steels, pressure-containing components, and welded critical joints where the risk of brittle failure or distortion must be minimized. It isn’t about coloring, sterilizing, or changing electrical resistance—those effects aren’t related to PWHT.
